HISTORY / ORIGIN
The story of microarrays began in 1979 when the first elementary semi-microarray, called a "dotted blot," was produced. However, the density of spots was low due to poor spotting equipment. The real breakthrough came in the 1990s when microarrays were developed for the automated analysis of thousands of different biomolecules simultaneously. In 1994, the first commercial Affymetrix Genechip and the first commercial scanner were introduced, marking the beginning of the modern microarray era.
